Another Life

If things had gone differently, I would have liked to be have been a pitcher for the Yankees. Maybe a relief pitcher for the Yankees, like Steve Howe. If I couldn’t play for the Yankees, I’d like to have been a journey-man pitcher, which I think Steve Howe was also. A dirty pitcher like Steve Howe.

I think I may be lactose intolerant. And I think I have been for a long time. Today consider whether you may be lactose intolerant too.

Thoughts, Sunday at Noon, 11/24/2008
1. I would like big CC Sabathia to sign with the Yankees right now.
2. I would like Merriweather Post Pavilion to leak right now.
3. I kinda like this new series by Ann Woo over at Tiny Vices. A little dramatic.
4. David Lynch answers questions for the NY Times.
5. How many days in a row have I eaten a bagel?
6. Look at Molly the Fantastic Pony’s prosthesis

I try to eat a bagel everyday at Absolute Bagels. Most of the time I don’t have to wait in line, cause the dudes know what I want. Everything with scallion and a large coffee, milk, one sugar. $5.05.
The woman pictured above made my bagel today. I don’t know anyone’s name at the place, and I think about asking alot, but then I don’t, which is why I always manage to feel guilty at Absolute.

"I have this dream that I’m an old man. Real old. Like one hundred and ninety years old. And I’m lying in bed, and I realize tonight is the night I am going to die. I drag my aching bones out of bed, and I head outside into the cold. Go to the liquor store, and I get drunk. Then I smoke some weed, a big blunt. Take a huge hit from a huge alien bong. Trade the alien bong for a gun and a bullet at a pawn shop. Time is running out. I’m dying. I search the streets for a cop. Any cop. And I get frustrated after a while because I can’t find one anywhere. What kind of world? And then just as I’m about to head home to die, I find one. A cop. I kill the cop. I’ve taken out a cop. And then I die."

— A good friend of mine who hates cops.

I asked for this haircut once. The only time I ever brought a photo to the barbershop for reference. An embarassing notion to begin with. The Asian woman who I showed the picture to was just absolutely baffled. How in the world did I expect her to make this out of what I was giving her? I backtracked, asked her what she thought, could it work if she tried it? Would this haircut look cool on me? She wasn’t going to give me a straight answer. I bit my lip and said I trust you. But I didn’t. She gave it a go, and I sat there with my glasses off, blind, and horrified. Later that day, I went to my therapist and spent a half hour talking about my hair, and risky decisions.

The first third of The Savage Detectives destroyed me a little. The 2nd third discouraged, and bothered me. Too many characters, too many narrators.  I ended up putting the book aside.
2666 comes out this week. 900 something pages. Legendary, epic, mysterious. A tomb. An atomic bomb. I think I should start a relationship with someone, perhaps a woman, where we trade off, back and forth, chapter by chapter, reading 2666 to each other. Pushing, pulling, and dragging each other to the end.
